Friends and Peer Pressure
After 2 months of school,  students are now comfortably settled in to the school routine, the classroom procedures, the teacher’s style and their social circles. Now is a time when the bonds and the closeness forms between friends and social groups are formed. This can be a very exhilarating time for those with lots of friends but for those with few or no friends, it can be a very lonely time. It can be a trying time for some students who are left out of games, not asked to parties, invited to the lunch table or included in group conversations. Sometimes the best intentions are misinterpreted so it is important to communicate well both with your words and body language. Here are a few tips that will help everyone feel included and comfortable.

Encourage others to join you and your friends if you see them sitting by themselves
If you know someone is a friend with people you are with, invite them to join in the conversations
Include everyone at the lunch tables
Never turn your back on someone when you are talking together in a group
When you are having a party, nake sure everyone is invited
Always say positive things about others
Be aware of other people’s feeling and talk about things early before they become issues

Heavy Backpack?

Not only can a heavy backpack be difficult  to carry and it can also be injurious to your health if not carried in the correct way. Students in middle school are sometimes so conscientious that that want to make sure they have all their materials and books especially when traveling home at night and back to school, lest they forget something important. This can be a problem , especially for the young ones or students with slight builds if their back pack gets too heavy for them. The rule of thumb is that the pack pack should not weigh more than 10-20% of the body weight. It might be a good idea to get out those scales and see how much the backpack weighs. If it is too heavy there are some easy things to consider……

Good fit: Find a backpack is not too large or small for your child’s back. It should not go below the waist area. When it is on, make sure it doesn’t hang too low on the waist or else it can cause one to lean forward when walking and develop improper posture.

Balance the load: Make sure that when you pack the backpack that all the heavy items are packed close to the body in the big compartment so the body can carry the weight well. The lighter things can be place d in the outer compartments..

Bigger is Not Necessarily Better: Try not to have a too large a backpack. They always seem to get “filled” no matter what the size. Remember, the smaller the better.

Use Both Shoulder Straps: This helps to even out the weight distribution and eases the load on the back. Make sure the shoulder straps have pads as well as this is more comfortable when carrying and can help to relieve the load on the shoulders.

With these experiences come the opportunity to make a choice, decision and understand, accept and appreciate their consequences, both good and bad. Through our work with the Advisory theme, students will engage in activities that allow them to explore responsibility, consequences, knowing yourself, values, and the decision making process.
